As a prominent global health organization, we are looking for a passionate and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to support our financial operations in Kasulu, Tanzania. This role is pivotal in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our financial processes, contributing to the successful delivery of our mission.

Position Overview:

The Assistant Accountant will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of internal controls and processing project-level transactions. You will ensure adherence to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), and MTI’s finance policies. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, directly contributing to the financial integrity of our programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Verification and Compliance:

    • Verify payment requisitions against MTI’s checklist to ensure compliance with financial procedures.
    • Review receipts, expenditures, purchase orders, and disbursement orders to confirm proper cost allocations and regulatory compliance.
  2. Record Keeping and Reporting:

    • Maintain the cash book and program vouchers; prepare documents for verification and ensure accurate posting to the general ledger.
    • Monitor petty cash expenditure and manage replenishments as needed.
    • Assist in the preparation of project financial reports by summarizing vouchers and ensuring adherence to MTI’s policies.
  3. Support and Technical Assistance:

    • Provide guidance to non-finance staff on financial policies and procedures.
    • Work with the Logistics & Procurement Department to ensure asset register accuracy and compliance.
  4. Budget and Cash Flow:

    • Participate in preparing annual cash flows and budget requirements, ensuring financial planning aligns with project needs.
  5. Safeguarding and Compliance:

    • Uphold MTI’s safeguarding principles, including protection from exploitation and abuse.
    • Promote a safe and respectful environment and adhere to MTI’s Code of Conduct.
  6. Additional Duties:

    • Perform other finance-related duties as assigned to support overall team goals and objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or Commerce.
  • CPA Certification or progress towards obtaining CPA is a plus.
  • 2 years of relevant work experience in finance and accounting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge: Basic understanding of non-profit accounting, ERP systems, and IFRS/IPSAS.
  • Skills: Proficiency in ERP systems and computerized accounting software; ability to explain financial procedures to non-finance staff.
  • Abilities: High accuracy in record-keeping, strong organizational skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently. Maintain confidentiality and integrity in all financial matters.

Physical and Work Environment:

  • The role involves frequent use of office equipment and occasional lifting up to 50kgs.
  • Travel to remote areas may be required, with potential health and safety considerations.
