The Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI), a parastatal under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, serves as the leading organization for wildlife research in Tanzania. With its headquarters located at Njiro Hill in Arusha, TAWIRI is tasked with conducting, coordinating, and supervising wildlife research across the nation.

Initially established in 1980 as the Serengeti Wildlife Research Institute (SWRI) through Act No. 4 of Parliament, TAWIRI's scope and mandate were significantly expanded in 1999. Act No. 10 of Parliament officially rebranded the Institute to TAWIRI, reflecting its enhanced role in wildlife research nationwide.
