Job Summary
This senior-level role is responsible for spearheading the Business Intelligence (BI), analytics, and data engineering functions within the bank. You’ll provide strategic guidance, oversee self-service analytics, and design robust data infrastructures. Regular research and development will form a core part of the role, ensuring the adoption of efficient tools and methodologies.
Key Responsibilities
Management Support
- Develop and implement the BI strategy, aligning it with the bank’s overarching goals.
- Collaborate with the Head of Strategy and Data to define and execute the data strategy.
- Gather and prioritize business intelligence requirements from multiple stakeholders.
- Set performance standards for BI solutions and monitor them through a data value tracker.
- Facilitate training to enhance data literacy and optimize BI tool usage across the bank.
- Oversee the technical architecture for data and self-service analytics, ensuring compliance with governance standards.
- Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of analysts and developers to achieve strategic objectives.
Risk and Control
- Embed a positive risk culture while applying risk frameworks effectively.
- Monitor operational risks and implement measures to mitigate potential incidents.
- Maintain compliance with Absa’s policies and regulatory requirements.
- Foster continuous improvement within the control environment to prevent errors.
Qualifications and Experience
Preferred Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in IT/Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Business Analytics, or related fields (required).
- A Master’s Degree in a relevant field will be an added advantage.
Experience
- At least 8 years of technical experience, with 5+ years in a leadership role.
- Proven track record within large, complex organizations with diverse stakeholders.
Knowledge and Skills
- Expertise in strategic and lateral thinking.
- Strong leadership, relationship management, and project management capabilities.
- Advanced proficiency in data infrastructure tools: Hadoop, SQL, AWS, and Azure.
- Familiarity with tools like JIRA, DevOps, and Planner for agile project management.
- Hands-on experience with BI and analytics tools like PowerBI, Tableau, or QlikView.

- Adaptability and a continuous learning mindset.
Technical Competencies
- Proficiency in visual analytics, query languages (SQL, Hive), and scripting (Python, R, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and big data engineering tools (Spark, Hadoop).
- Advanced skills in structured and unstructured data analysis, workflow data tools, and streaming data analytics.
