Electro-Mechanical Technician Opportunity at the United Nations / IRMCT

Position: Electro-Mechanical Technician (Individual Contractor)
Fee for Service: 239,471 TZS per day
Location: Arusha, Tanzania
Duration: 6 months (with a possibility of up to a 3-month extension, starting February 2025)


About the Role

This position is within the General Services Section, Registry, under the supervision of the Facilities Management Unit (FMU) Supervisor. The selected candidate will provide specialized support in maintaining and operating critical building systems, ensuring uninterrupted functionality and compliance with operational standards.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Operational Maintenance and Inspection:

  • Operate and maintain essential building systems, including electrical power distribution, HVAC systems, fire pumps, generators, UPS systems, plumbing, elevators, and solar power systems.
  • Monitor 24/7 power supply to the Data Center, troubleshooting and repairing main and backup systems.
  • Inspect newly installed HVAC equipment and ensure functionality in collaboration with contractors.

Water and Plumbing Systems:

  • Oversee the 72,000-liter water storage system, including gravity flow and solar booster pumps.
  • Monitor water flow, inspect storage tanks, and maintain plumbing infrastructure.

Preventive Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules and reports.
  • Perform repairs on plumbing, electrical systems, and office equipment, and undertake welding and metal fabrication tasks.
  • Execute minor construction and repair tasks, such as partition installations, lock replacements, and glass repairs.

Vendor and Contractor Management:

  • Evaluate repair needs and assist in drafting work plans and specifications.
  • Supervise external contractors to ensure project compliance and quality assurance.
  • Monitor contractor performance and provide status updates on completed work.

Additional Duties:

  • Support ad-hoc assignments and other duties as directed by the FMU Supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

Required Skills and Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Technical Certificate in Electrical, Mechanics, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities management is essential.

Desirable Experience:

  • Previous work with UN International Criminal Tribunals is an advantage.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of Swahili is desirable.
