Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Technical Officer Vacancy at PATH
PATH, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to achieving health equity, is seeking an Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Technical Officer to join the USAID-funded Usalama wa Afya Duniani (Global Health Security) project. This five-year initiative focuses on strengthening Tanzania's capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to Emerging Infectious Disease threats through a One Health approach.
Job Summary
As the AMR Technical Officer, you will play a critical role in implementing Tanzania’s National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR). Your responsibilities will include supporting AMR surveillance, antimicrobial consumption tracking, and implementing antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) at healthcare facilities. You will work closely with national and regional stakeholders to ensure data is utilized effectively to inform patient care, create antibiograms, and develop facility-specific formularies aligned with the AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) classification.
Key Responsibilities
- Strengthen Tanzania’s AMR detection and surveillance across human, animal, and environmental sectors.
- Monitor antibiotic resistance patterns, usage, and management practices.
- Support the development and implementation of national AMR plans, SOPs, and policies at all levels.
- Conduct assessments of AMR detection and surveillance capacity in public and private sectors.
- Coordinate AMR activities with stakeholders to ensure alignment and effectiveness.
- Assist in establishing national AMR surveillance systems capable of reporting to global systems like WHO GLASS.
- Provide technical input for project work plans, activity implementation, and evaluations.
- Collaborate with Global Health Security Agenda partners and other stakeholders for a unified approach to AMR activities.
- Regularly review and validate data to maintain accuracy and reliability.
- Compile and present quarterly reports for stakeholders and donors.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
- Doctor of Medicine or Bachelor’s degree in Health Laboratory Sciences, Epidemiology, Microbiology, Lab Management, or a related field.
- MSc in Public Health, Laboratory Sciences, or Microbiology is an added advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years implementing AMR and laboratory activities in Tanzania.
- Knowledge of laboratory principles for diagnosing infectious diseases.
- Proven expertise in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Experience conducting training and building capacity.
Skills and Attributes:
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Proficiency in technical writing and project documentation.
