Library Intern Position at the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT)

Background
The United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) was created by the UN Security Council in 2010 to carry out essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) after the completion of their mandates. The Mechanism operates from two branches, with one based in Arusha, Tanzania, and the other in The Hague, Netherlands.
The IRMCT provides crucial administrative, legal, and diplomatic support, including services related to court operations, enforcement of sentences, preservation of case records, protection of victims and witnesses, and assisting national jurisdictions.
Internship Opportunity in the Library
The IRMCT Library in Arusha is offering an internship for students interested in contributing to its valuable services. Under the supervision of the Library Assistant, interns will engage in various tasks that support the library’s operations. The library provides a broad collection of resources related to international law, human rights, genocide studies, and more, along with specialized services for internal and external users.
Key Responsibilities
As a Library Intern, you will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in various aspects of library services:
- Library Circulation: Assist with checking out materials, performing discharges, and managing recalls.
- Cataloguing & Classification: Help register new materials, assign classification codes, and affix labels to items.
- Research & Reference Services: Assist in locating online journal articles, responding to reference queries, and performing general library activities.
- Public Relations & Communications: Contribute to public relations, assist in preparing for official visits, and support social media activities.
- Administrative Support: Aid in compiling news summaries, preparing communication products, and supporting library administration.
Qualifications and Skills
Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications at the time of application:
- Option 1: Enrolled in or have completed the final year of a bachelor's degree program (minimum) in a relevant field such as Library/Information Science, Information Management, Communications, or related disciplines.
- Option 2: Enrolled in or have completed a graduate-level program (master’s degree or higher) in relevant fields.
Desired Skills & Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of major social media platforms.
- Familiarity with photography and audio-visual production (desirable).
- Proficiency in computer applications and library cataloguing systems.
- Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of French, Kiswahili, or Kinyarwanda is a plus.
