Position Overview:
IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is seeking a Sustainable Financing Specialist (Climate) to support the implementation of a successful Climate Business program in East and Southern Africa. The specialist will collaborate with financial institutions and other stakeholders to deliver climate finance solutions that drive sustainable investments, manage risks, and contribute to climate action goals. This position offers an opportunity to work in a global development institution focused on private sector solutions for climate change and sustainability.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop Climate Financing Opportunities

    • Work with regional teams to identify, structure, and execute climate-related investment opportunities.
    • Design client-specific climate strategies and engagement plans, including pitch books for FIs and countries.
  2. Financial Analysis & Risk Management

    • Conduct financial modeling, due diligence, and climate risk assessments for climate projects.
    • Perform Paris Alignment assessments, evaluate GHG accounting, and ensure that investments are aligned with global climate goals.
  3. Stakeholder Engagement

    • Build and maintain relationships with mid-level clients, governments, and development partners to identify and pursue climate finance opportunities.
    • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure effective transaction structuring and delivery of climate finance solutions.
  4. Portfolio Management & Monitoring

    • Lead monitoring and reporting of climate finance portfolios, ensuring alignment with sustainability goals and evaluating progress.
    • Provide oversight and quality control for financial models and project evaluations.
  5. Market Creation & Development

    • Identify barriers to climate finance market creation in targeted regions and help develop market-building strategies.
    • Support capacity building within financial institutions to scale climate-smart financing.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Master’s Degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in climate finance, sustainable finance, or environmental markets.
  • Proven experience in structuring and closing investments, particularly in equity and debt.
  • Financial modeling, due diligence, and climate risk expertise.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of climate risk management, GHG accounting, and Paris Agreement alignment.
