The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) is a leading research institution based at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) campus in Mwanza, Tanzania. As a collaborative initiative between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and NIMR, MITU is dedicated to improving public health by developing and evaluating interventions against HIV and other pressing health challenges.
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented professional to join our laboratory team as a Laboratory Sample Archivist. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to world-class research while ensuring the effective management, tracking, and organization of laboratory samples across various research projects.
Position: Laboratory Sample Archivist

Key Responsibilities:
✔ Sample Management & Archiving: Oversee the day-to-day handling, storage, and organization of laboratory samples, ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practices (GCP), Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), and MITU’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
✔ Database & Tracking: Maintain accurate records of archived samples using laboratory data management systems.
✔ Sample Retrieval & Quality Control: Ensure timely retrieval of samples when required, while adhering to strict quality control protocols.
✔ Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all sample handling and archiving procedures meet international research standards.
✔ Collaboration & Coordination: Work closely with laboratory teams, researchers, and external partners to streamline sample processing, documentation, and storage.
✔ Audit & Inspection Support: Assist in the preparation of sample documentation for internal audits and regulatory inspections.
✔ Shipment Coordination: Support the preparation and transfer of samples to external laboratories in line with project needs and regulations.
Qualifications & Experience:
๐ Essential:
๐น Diploma in Laboratory Technology or a related field.
๐น Strong understanding of sample handling, archiving procedures, and laboratory best practices.
๐น Experience with database management and tracking systems for laboratory samples.
๐น Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
๐น Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
๐น Strong communication and teamwork skills, with flexibility to travel when required.
๐น Proficiency in laboratory data management systems.
๐ Desirable:
✅ Experience in clinical research sample management.
✅ Familiarity with laboratory tracking software and digital archiving tools.
✅ Training in Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP).
✅ Professional registration with a relevant board.
✅ Interest in clinical and public health research.
