Position Overview
IHI is looking for a passionate Laboratory Technologist to join our team in Ifakara. The successful candidate will conduct laboratory testing and analysis crucial to the management of HIV and TB patients, including those with co-morbidities. This role involves collaborating with healthcare institutions, government authorities, and research platforms such as the Kilombero and Ulanga Antiretroviral Cohort (KIULARCO).
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct laboratory testing on blood samples, biological fluids, and other specimens (including full blood picture, chemistry, CD4, viral load, resistance testing, Crag screening, culture, etc.) in compliance with KIULARCO protocols and study-specific guidelines.
- Perform routine maintenance, quality control, and quality assurance for laboratory equipment and procedures.
- Manage laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring availability and proper storage.
- Maintain accurate data entry and documentation of test results.
- Organize and manage sample freezing and biobanking for research purposes.
- Train and share knowledge with fellow team members as needed.
- Engage in national and international networks, scientific meetings, and conferences.
- Participate in research development, manuscript writing, and study contributions within KIULARCO and IHI projects.
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory testing and quality assurance.
- Attend mandatory team and hospital meetings, including weekly Tuesday CDCI meetings and other IHI/hospital-related discussions.
- Support planning, coordination, and execution of research activities in collaboration with IHI and other partners.
- Perform any additional tasks assigned by the Project Leader or Director of SFRRH.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science, Zoology, or a related field.
- Experience in HIV/TB laboratory testing or relevant certification is an advantage.
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency in Swahili and English (both spoken and written).
- Strong interest in HIV/TB research and diagnostics.
- Highly motivated and detail-oriented with a passion for laboratory-based research.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong professional ethics and commitment to quality work.
- Result-driven approach with strong planning and organizational skills.
