Girl Effect, a groundbreaking non-profit organization, has made it its mission to revolutionize how adolescent girls across Africa and Asia navigate life’s challenges. From health and nutrition to education and relationships, Girl Effect uses innovative media platforms to empower girls with the knowledge and confidence to take charge of their futures. With a digital-first approach, they’ve been able to reach over 50 million girls, and now, they’re expanding their efforts in Tanzania through the Tujibebe brand.

In a bid to keep Tujibebe’s digital presence vibrant, engaging, and, most importantly, safe for its users, Girl Effect is hiring a Social Media Moderator on a long-term consultancy basis. This role will focus on enhancing Tujibebe’s visibility, moderating conversations, and fostering a supportive online community for girls in Tanzania. Here’s why this opportunity is more than just a job—it’s a chance to make a lasting impact on the lives of young women across the country.

What is Tujibebe?

Derived from Swahili, Tujibebe means “let’s lift ourselves up together,” and it serves as the ethos of this mobile-first youth brand. Tujibebe offers Tanzanian girls a wealth of information on vital issues, including setting up businesses, financial literacy, and health education. The content is delivered through an interactive mix of radio dramas, chat shows, IVR lines (free on Vodacom), and social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

This unique approach ensures that girls—whether they own or borrow a phone—can access crucial, life-changing information. It’s more than just education; it’s inspiration, guidance, and support rolled into one dynamic package. But for Tujibebe to reach its full potential, it needs someone who can help manage its digital presence and engage with its growing audience of young girls. Enter the Social Media Moderator.

Why is This Role Important?

The digital world can be a chaotic space, especially for young girls. Social media platforms are filled with valuable information but can also be places of misinformation, negativity, and unsafe interactions. As Tujibebe’s Social Media Moderator, your job will be to ensure that these platforms remain a positive, empowering space for girls.

You’ll be directly involved in:

  • Engaging with followers: Responding to comments and queries, and ensuring that every interaction reflects Tujibebe’s values and goals.
  • Content creation: Supporting the creative team by designing captivating social media posts and writing compelling captions.
  • Safeguarding the community: Working closely with the Safeguarding Manager to address concerns, filter inappropriate content, and promote safe online behavior.
  • Data and insights: Collaborating with the Evidence and Insights team to analyze audience engagement and generate reports to improve future campaigns.

Skills You’ll Bring to the Table

This position calls for someone who is more than just social media savvy. Girl Effect is looking for a creative thinker with the ability to adapt to ever-changing trends. You’ll need to be a great communicator, particularly in Swahili, as you’ll be speaking directly to Tanzanian girls from low- to middle-income backgrounds. The ability to write, edit, and moderate content that is engaging, educational, and respectful is critical.

Experience in health-related content or behavior change campaigns—especially around topics like sexual and reproductive health, economic empowerment, routine immunization, and HPV uptake—will set you apart from other candidates. After all, Girl Effect is about more than just fun and entertainment; it’s about driving real change in the lives of young women.

Why Work with Girl Effect?

Being part of Girl Effect means contributing to a mission that creates ripple effects of change, starting with one girl but extending to entire communities. You’ll be at the forefront of a movement that is not only shaping the futures of individual girls but also driving cultural shifts in Tanzania.

Tujibebe is growing, and your role will be crucial in ensuring that it continues to thrive. Through your work, you’ll help young women make informed decisions about their health, education, and future aspirations. You’ll help build a safe, engaging online space where girls can feel heard, respected, and motivated to chase their dreams.

Commitment and Compensation

This is a 12-month consultancy, requiring up to 20 hours per week. Girl Effect is looking for someone who can start by 1 November 2024, and you’ll be expected to stick with the project until the end of September 2025. In return, you’ll get the opportunity to make a real difference while gaining valuable experience working with a dynamic, forward-thinking organization.
