Legal Internship at the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT)

Location: Arusha, Tanzania
Duration: 6 Months (15 February 2025 to 15 August 2025)


Background

The United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) was established by the UN Security Council in 2010 to carry out vital functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) after their respective mandates were completed. With branches in Arusha, Tanzania, and The Hague, Netherlands, the Mechanism plays a key role in upholding the legacy of international criminal justice through its administrative, legal, policy, and diplomatic functions.

The Office of the Registrar (OR) in Arusha offers a unique opportunity for legal interns to gain hands-on experience and contribute to its functions, supporting the work of various Registry sections, including the Mechanism Archives, Judicial Operations, and the Witness Support and Protection Unit.


Internship Responsibilities

Legal interns in the Office of the Registrar (OR) will work under the direct supervision of legal officers and provide support in the following key areas:

  • Legal Research: Conduct research on topics related to international, criminal, and administrative law.
  • Drafting Legal Documents: Assist in drafting and reviewing legal submissions, official correspondence, memoranda, and decisions.
  • Case Analysis: Summarize recent court filings and perform routine tasks like reference checking and compiling legal materials.
  • Administrative Support: Aid in the preparation of legal documents, internal reports, and communication materials for the OR.

Interns may also be assigned other related duties as necessary.


Qualifications and Skills

To be considered for the internship, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Option 1: Law students currently enrolled in or have completed the final year of a first university degree program (bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  2. Option 2: Law students enrolled in or have completed a graduate-level program (master’s degree or higher).

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of international criminal law and legal procedures.
  • Proficiency in standard software applications and legal research tools.
  • Prior legal experience is advantageous but not required.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is essential.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable, but not mandatory.

Additional Information

  • Internship Duration & Working Hours: This full-time internship spans six months from 15 February to 15 August 2025. Interns will work Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Friday until 2:00 p.m. Overtime may be required on occasion.
  • Unpaid Internship: The internship is unpaid. All costs related to travel, accommodation, insurance, and living expenses must be covered by the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Visa and Insurance: Interns are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas and securing appropriate insurance coverage during the internship.
