About the Role
As the Senior Social Development Specialist / CMU Coordinator, you will:
- Provide leadership on social sustainability and risk management across Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
- Work closely with governments, the World Bank Country Management Unit (CMU), and diverse stakeholders to enhance compliance with the Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).
- Play a pivotal role in delivering impactful, socially inclusive projects that improve lives.
Core Responsibilities
Social Development and Risk Management:
- Act as the primary liaison with government bodies in the designated countries to address compliance and social sustainability challenges.
- Support project preparation and implementation, focusing on social risk management for high-risk initiatives.
- Guide stakeholders on ESF standards, including resettlement planning, labor compliance, and institutional capacity building.
Policy and Advocacy:
- Lead dialogue with policymakers, international partners, and civil society to strengthen social sustainability.
- Collaborate on key strategies such as Systematic Country Diagnostics (SCDs) and Country Partnership Frameworks (CPFs).
Capacity Building:
- Design and implement ESF training tailored to specific projects and sectors.
- Strengthen local consultation mechanisms and grievance management systems.
Portfolio Quality Assurance:
- Oversee social risk management for Category A/High/Substantial risk projects.
- Conduct regular reviews and collaborate with other specialists to maintain high-quality standards.
Innovation and Knowledge Sharing:
- Initiate studies on critical social development topics, including stakeholder engagement and gender equity.
- Mentor junior staff and foster collaboration across teams.
Qualifications and Skills
Education & Experience:
- Advanced degree in a relevant social science field (e.g., Sociology, Social Anthropology, Political Science, or Human Geography).
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in social risk management, preferably in East Africa or similar regions.
Technical Expertise:
- Comprehensive understanding of the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).
- Proven track record in resettlement planning, stakeholder engagement, and social risk mitigation.
- Familiarity with technology solutions for social development is an added advantage.
Competencies:
- Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to translate analysis into actionable strategies.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in English.
- Experience working in multicultural and diverse environments.
