About Us
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a global humanitarian organization dedicated to providing assistance and durable solutions for refugees and displaced populations, guided by humanitarian principles and human rights. Since 2015, DRC has been actively engaged in the Burundian Refugee Response in Tanzania, addressing critical needs in camp management, livelihoods, protection, WASH, and more. Currently, we are implementing energy and environmental projects in Nduta and Nyarugusu refugee camps.
We are seeking a skilled Economic Recovery Officer – Engineer to support the design and implementation of climate resilience assets to address climate change, food insecurity, land degradation, and limited livelihood opportunities in the Kigoma region.
Your Role
As the Economic Recovery Officer – Engineer, you will work closely with WFP, UNHCR, Local Government Authorities, and other partners to design and implement projects that enhance community resilience. This involves creating and restoring assets, employing sustainable land use practices, and supporting livelihoods in refugee and host communities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement climate-resilient infrastructure, including water harvesting/storage systems, soil erosion control measures, and gully treatment structures.
- Conduct assessments and oversee the planning and execution of livelihoods and environmental initiatives.
- Monitor field activities, provide technical support, and ensure compliance with program goals and donor agreements.
- Build capacity among community members, beneficiaries, and staff through training and on-the-job coaching.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to promote sustainable practices and conserve natural resources.
- Prepare detailed progress reports and ensure proper documentation of activities and outcomes.
- Contribute to proposal development for new livelihoods, food security, and environmental initiatives.
- Maintain productive relationships with community members, village leaders, and local institutions to foster project success.
What We’re Looking For
Qualifications:
- University Degree/Advanced Diploma in Irrigation and Water Resource Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or related fields.
- At least 2 years of experience in designing and implementing climate resilience assets (e.g., dams, irrigation canals, terracing, watershed management).
- Proficiency in GIS software, QGIS, and AutoCAD is an added advantage.
- Strong knowledge of climate change impacts, food security, and sustainable land use practices.
- Experience with community-based empowerment programs, especially with vulnerable populations.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with digital tools for project management.

- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in diverse cultural settings and manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Strong ethical standards aligned with DRC’s values and Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS).
- Fluency in English and Swahili is required.
