Role Overview
The Assistant Accountant will be responsible for preparing financial accounts accurately and promptly while ensuring compliance with company policies and statutory regulations. This position plays a vital role in maintaining financial integrity and supporting the organization’s operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Intermediary Payments: Process and pay commissions to intermediaries promptly in line with departmental Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Cashiering Supervision: Oversee cashiers to ensure proper posting of all receipts and payments into correct account codes.
- Accurate Receipting: Ensure timely and accurate receipting of company funds (cash, cheques, and electronic transfers).
- Bank Reconciliation: Perform regular bank reconciliations and resolve unreconciled items promptly.
- Cash and Cheque Banking: Ensure all cash and cheques are banked in accordance with company policies.
- Petty Cash Management: Review and verify petty cash accounting.
- Fixed Asset Management: Maintain and update the company’s Fixed Asset Register.
- Investments Accounting: Ensure proper accounting for investments and investment income and prepare investment schedules.
- General Ledger Monitoring: Post transactions into appropriate accounts, conduct regular reconciliations, and prepare monthly reconciliation statements.
- Management Accounts Preparation: Assist in preparing monthly management accounts by maintaining accrual and prepayment schedules.
- Statutory Returns: Ensure accurate and timely filing and payment of VAT, PAYE, SDL, withholding tax, and corporate tax installments.
- Document Management: Maintain relevant supporting documents for all transactions, ensuring proper filing for receipts and payments.
- Audit Support: Assist internal and external auditors as required.
- Other Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned by the Financial Accountant.
Key Performance Indicators
- Timely submission of financial reports.
- Turnaround time (TAT) for allocation of receipts.
- TAT for reconciliation of intermediary balances.
Working Relationships
Internal:
- Reports to the Financial Accountant.
- Collaborates with other business heads as needed.
External:
- Interacts with tax authorities, suppliers, and financial consultants.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
- 2–4 years of experience in a similar role.
- Knowledge of insurance regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity with Britam products is an added advantage.
