Introduction

WWF is offering an exciting opportunity for a Marine Internship as part of its ongoing project aimed at enhancing conservation efforts in the Rufiji-Mafia-Kibiti Biosphere Reserve. This initiative focuses on strengthening community-based conservation through strategic partnerships and innovative approaches. The internship will play a crucial role in supporting sustainable marine conservation, particularly in Mafia Island, by promoting co-management practices and whale shark conservation efforts in collaboration with governments, WATONET, local communities, and other key stakeholders.


Main Tasks and Responsibilities

Under the technical guidance of the Seascape Programme Fisheries Officer and the WWF Mafia Office Coordinator, the intern will support the delivery of the project objectives, including:

  1. Community Capacity Building:

    • Facilitate community training sessions on good governance practices and principles to promote Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) using Nature-based Solutions (NbS), climate-smart approaches, and ICT4Fisheries.
    • Integrate whale shark conservation into management strategies to ensure sustainable resource use.
  2. Awareness Campaigns:

    • Lead the promotion of inclusive events by engaging WATONET and other stakeholders to commemorate project activities.
    • Develop and implement educational campaigns on marine conservation and sustainable practices.
  3. Data Collection & Collaboration:

    • Design and update socioeconomic data collection tools for whale shark conservation.
    • Collaborate with WATONET, Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI), and Whale Shark Tour Operators of Tanzania to complement ecological studies with socio-economic insights.
  4. Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Support WATONET, district authorities, and stakeholders in ensuring inclusive community, youth, and women engagement in whale shark conservation efforts.
    • Encourage the involvement of women, youth, and conservation groups as key stakeholders in resource management and sustainable livelihood development.
  5. Sustainable Ecotourism Promotion:

    • Assist in promoting sustainable ecotourism activities, including whale shark monitoring and educational initiatives for school clubs and community groups.

Required Qualifications

  • Education:
    Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields: Marine Ecology, Project Management, Community Development, Governance of Natural Resources, Fisheries Management, Aquaculture, or a related field.

  • Skills and Knowledge:

    • Background in fisheries, environment, livelihood development, and community engagement.
    • Knowledge of whale shark conservation is an added advantage.
    • Proficiency in social media for marketing and promotional purposes.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in Adobe creative tools (e.g., Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro) is a bonus.
  • Ability to develop field stories, fact sheets, and infographics.
  • Cultural adaptability and sensitivity, particularly when working with coastal communities.
  • Experience in community mobilization, awareness creation, and gender-inclusive initiatives.
  • Strong report-writing skills and the ability to prepare concept notes for activities.
