We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and talented individual to join our team as a Business Reporter for The Citizen.

Job Purpose

The Business Reporter will craft well-researched, factual, and engaging business news and feature stories, adhering to journalistic ethics, MCL’s editorial policies, and house style.

Key Responsibilities

  1. News and Feature Development

    • Write high-quality, factual, and detailed news or feature stories for The Citizen.
    • Produce content that requires minimal rewrites or additional reporting.

  2. Event Coverage and Reporting

    • Attend assigned news functions, conduct interviews, take notes, and record audio/visual materials as necessary.
    • Follow up on news leads and maintain close relationships with reliable sources.

  3. Research and Background Analysis

    • Conduct thorough research to provide complete and accurate context for all stories.
    • Deliver news that aligns with MCL’s house style and editorial objectives.

  4. Story Creation and Collaboration

    • Pitch story ideas to the Business Editor or Section Editor.
    • Work closely with photographers to ensure stories are visually compelling.

  5. Contact Building and Networking

    • Continuously build a robust contact list, leveraging it for exclusive reports.
    • Demonstrate value through consistent delivery of unique insights and timely news.

  6. Editorial Standards and Deadlines

    • Uphold journalistic ethics and MCL’s editorial policies.
    • Meet strict deadlines while ensuring the accuracy of facts and adherence to editorial style.

  7. Breaking News Response

    • Respond promptly to breaking news, providing accurate and timely updates.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Experience: 2-3 years of professional experience in journalism, with a focus on business reporting.
