Join Ifakara Health Institute as a Research Officer – Analyst

Are you passionate about data science, research, and public health? Do you have expertise in statistical modeling, epidemiology, and data analytics? Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) invites highly skilled analysts to join the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) Dar es Salaam Node as Research Officers.

In this role, you will contribute to cutting-edge malaria research, enhance data science capabilities, and support the development of analytical models and data-driven solutions.


Key Responsibilities

1. Data Analysis & Research Support

✔️ Conduct literature reviews, data extraction, and processing to support malaria research.
✔️ Manage, analyze, and interpret large datasets using tools such as R, Python, STATA, ArcGIS/QGIS, and Excel.
✔️ Develop statistical models and generate insights for epidemiological studies.
✔️ Prepare reports, academic papers, and data visualizations for research dissemination.

2. Data Management & Quality Assurance

✔️ Ensure accuracy and integrity in data extraction, cleaning, and analysis.
✔️ Maintain data processing protocols, documentation, and IT best practices.
✔️ Promote ethical and responsible data usage in compliance with institutional policies.

3. Collaboration & Training

✔️ Work closely with senior researchers, epidemiologists, and data scientists.
✔️ Support the development of data dashboards and visualization tools.
✔️ Contribute to training programs for researchers and junior staff.

4. Workplace Safety & Compliance

✔️ Identify and assess workplace hazards and apply necessary controls.
✔️ Report any incidents, injuries, or near-miss events.
✔️ Adhere to Ifakara Health Institute’s core policies and ethical standards.


Required Qualifications & Skills

🎓 Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a similar quantitative discipline.
  • Strong proficiency in R programming (mandatory).
  • Experience in data wrangling, statistical modeling, and spatial data analysis.
  • Familiarity with epidemiology, vector-borne diseases, and public health research.

💡 Technical & Soft Skills:
✔️ Ability to work with spatial data using GIS tools (ArcGIS/QGIS).
✔️ Experience in data visualization and dashboard development.
✔️ Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
✔️ Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
✔️ Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

🌍 Additional Advantageous Skills:
✔️ Knowledge of other languages (Swahili, French, Spanish, Portuguese).
✔️ Experience in writing research proposals and academic publications.
✔️ Interest in pursuing MSc or PhD studies in advanced modeling.
