Exciting Internship Opportunity: Office of the Prosecutor – United Nations / IRMCT

Are you passionate about international criminal justice and eager to gain hands-on legal experience? The Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) at the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) is inviting applications for its legal internship program at its Arusha Branch.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the legacy of the ICTR & ICTY, enhance your legal skills, and gain practical experience in international humanitarian and criminal law.


Key Responsibilities

✔ Conduct legal & factual research in international criminal law.
✔ Assist in drafting legal memoranda on various judicial matters.
✔ Support review and contempt investigations & post-conviction litigation.
✔ Analyze and summarize witness testimonies & evidence.
✔ Assist in providing support to national jurisdictions & capacity-building initiatives.
✔ Perform essential tasks such as cite-checking, legal material compilation, and more.

Interns work under the supervision of Senior Legal Officers and Legal Officers at the OTP, gaining invaluable experience in international legal proceedings.


Eligibility & Qualifications

🎓 Academic Requirements:
✔ Enrolled in OR have completed the final year of a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B or equivalent).
✔ Enrolled in OR have completed a Master’s Degree in Law (LL.M or equivalent) is an added advantage.

💼 Skills & Competencies:
✔ Strong legal research & analytical skills.
✔ Excellent written & oral communication.
✔ Computer literacy (Microsoft Office & legal research tools).

🌎 Language Proficiency:
Fluency in English is required.
Working knowledge of French is highly desirable.


Additional Information

🔹 This is an unpaid internship. Interns must cover their own travel, accommodation, insurance, and living expenses.
🔹 Interns must maintain strict confidentiality regarding all unpublished information obtained during the internship.
🔹 The United Nations does not charge any recruitment fees at any stage of the application process.
