Local Consultant – UNPRPD, Tanzania Country Office

Job Opportunity at UNFPA

Position Overview:

Make a real impact with UNFPA, the leading UN agency dedicated to ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is realized. Our 2022-2025 strategic plan emphasizes three transformative results:

✅ Ending preventable maternal deaths
✅ Addressing the unmet need for family planning
✅ Eradicating gender-based violence and harmful practices

As we navigate a world where fundamental human rights are increasingly at risk, we seek principled and ethical professionals to champion these causes with conviction. If you are someone who transforms, inspires, and delivers high-impact results, we want to hear from you.

About the Role:

The United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) is spearheading a global initiative to integrate disability-inclusive and gender-transformative approaches into national care and support systems.

As a Local Consultant, you will play a pivotal role in conducting a groundbreaking study across Tanzania (tentatively in Dar es Salaam and Shinyanga) to assess the exposure and risk factors of gender-based violence (GBV) among women and girls with disabilities—whether as unpaid caregivers or as those receiving care.

Your insights will help shape policies, improve protection measures, and ensure that Tanzania’s care systems become more inclusive and effective.

Your Responsibilities:

📌 Conduct in-depth research

  • Investigate the connection between unpaid care work and gender-based violence affecting women and girls with disabilities.
  • Identify risk and protective factors influencing GBV in caregiving roles.
  • Assess barriers to accessing support services for GBV survivors.
  • Engage with key stakeholders, including persons with disabilities, caregivers, and support organizations.

📌 Deliver high-impact reports & policy recommendations

  • Compile a comprehensive research report with actionable insights.
  • Develop case studies highlighting real-life experiences and systemic gaps.
  • Create a policy brief offering strategic recommendations for national adoption.

📌 Facilitate stakeholder engagement

  • Lead a validation meeting to discuss findings and refine recommendations.
  • Work closely with UN agencies, government entities, and advocacy groups to ensure broad-based support for proposed policies.

What We’re Looking For:

🎓 Education & Expertise:

  • Advanced degree in Social Science, Public Health, Gender/Development Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in gender equality, gender-based violence, disability rights, and unpaid care work.
  • Strong qualitative research skills with expertise in Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs).
  • Experience crafting policy briefs to influence national and international policies.

🛠 Key Skills & Competencies:

  • Deep understanding of human rights and protection frameworks for women and girls with disabilities.
  • Proven track record in inclusive research methodologies, ensuring accessibility for all participants.
  • Ability to analyze complex social issues and recommend actionable solutions.
  • Proficiency in Swahili & English (written and spoken).

Deliverables & Work Schedule:

📅 Duration: 70 working days (starting February 2025 – August 2025)

Inception Report – Develop and present a detailed research plan.
Draft Research Reports – Comprehensive analysis of findings.
