The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to support the implementation of the PAFIE-BSFL Project. This initiative focuses on advancing Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) production as a sustainable protein alternative for small-scale farmers in Kenya and Tanzania.

📍 Duty Station: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (Nationally Recruited Position)


Key Responsibilities

🔹 Assist technical leads in designing and executing field studies.
🔹 Oversee BSFL technology trials conducted by BSF Breeding and Chanzi Ltd in Dar es Salaam and Arusha, collecting data to evaluate performance.
🔹 Document waste feedstock streams used in BSFL production, including types, quantities, and seasonal variations.
🔹 Gather financial and economic data from BSF Breeding, Chanzi Ltd, and feed companies using BSFL in their formulations.
🔹 Supervise on-farm trials, assessing the impact of BSFL-based compound feeds and frass-derived fertilizers on crops.
🔹 Support the preparation of research ethics applications, data-sharing agreements, and project reports.
🔹 Contribute to data analysis, result interpretation, and preparation of reports, publications, and presentations.
🔹 Organize stakeholder engagement activities, including farmer mobilization, feedback sessions, and workshops.
🔹 Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.


What We’re Looking For

Education: Master’s degree in Livestock Sciences, Agricultural Economics, or a related field.
Experience: Minimum 3 years in livestock value chains, climate-smart innovations, and waste management.
Professional Certification: Relevant certification is a plus.
