Position: Zonal Roots & Shoots Coordinator – Zanzibar

Reports to: National Roots & Shoots Coordinator
Job Summary
JGI-TZ is looking for a passionate and dynamic Zonal Roots & Shoots Coordinator to lead, manage, and expand the Roots & Shoots program in Zanzibar. This role requires a motivated leader who will engage young people, educators, and volunteers in environmental conservation, community action, and animal welfare initiatives.
The ideal candidate will work closely with schools, universities, conservation partners, and local government authorities to strengthen the Roots & Shoots movement and drive impactful change across Zanzibar.
Key Responsibilities
🌱 Program Leadership & Coordination
✔ Lead and expand Roots & Shoots activities across Unguja and Pemba by establishing and revitalizing clubs in schools and communities.
✔ Oversee and coordinate youth-led projects focused on environmental conservation, animal welfare, and community engagement.
✔ Recruit, train, and mentor volunteers, educators, interns, and youth leaders to drive compassionate action in their communities.
✔ Represent the National Coordinator in stakeholder meetings and strategic networks within the Zanzibar region.
📢 Outreach & Community Engagement
✔ Facilitate Roots & Shoots club registrations, certifications, and event organization across the region.
✔ Organize environmental education initiatives, workshops, and awareness campaigns at Jambiani Nature Centre, Zanzibar Scholarships, and other local institutions.
✔ Foster strong collaborations with government agencies, NGOs, and universities to enhance program impact.
✔ Coordinate and host visits from National and International Roots & Shoots members and other JGI visitors.
📊 Fundraising & Program Development
✔ Work closely with the National Coordinator to develop proposals and secure funding for Roots & Shoots initiatives.
✔ Support the implementation of JGI-TZ conservation projects in Zanzibar as required.
✔ Under the guidance of the Scholarship Coordinator, assist in managing the Zanzibar scholarship program (subject to fund availability).
📂 Administration & Reporting
✔ Provide regular program updates and reports to the National Coordinator.
✔ Manage all technical, logistical, and administrative operations at the Zanzibar zonal office.
✔ Ensure compliance with safety and security protocols for Roots & Shoots assets in Zanzibar.
✔ Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications & Competencies
🎓 Education & Experience
✔ Bachelor’s degree in Education, Environmental Science, Wildlife Conservation, Ecology, Social Sciences, or a related field.
✔ Experience designing and implementing conservation education programs for youth and communities.
✔ Proven track record of leading teams, managing volunteers, and coordinating social/environmental projects.
✔ Experience in peace education, land-use planning, project monitoring & evaluation, and curriculum development is an added advantage.
📝 Skills & Abilities
✔ Strong skills in proposal writing, fundraising, and grant management.
✔ Excellent project management and leadership skills.
✔ Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
✔ Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal) in English and Kiswahili.
✔ Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SPSS for data analysis.
✔ Experience collaborating with government agencies, UN bodies, NGOs, and conservation partners.
✔ Familiarity with Zanzibar’s environmental and community dynamics (prior experience working in Unguja & Pemba is a plus).
✔ Previous membership with Roots & Shoots is a strong advantage.
