Join Danish Refugee Council as a Legal Assistant
Are you passionate about human rights and refugee protection? Do you have experience providing legal aid and advocacy in humanitarian settings? If so, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) invites you to apply for the Legal Assistant position in Nduta Refugee Camp, Kibondo.
As a Legal Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring that refugees and displaced individuals receive essential legal support. You will work closely with stakeholders, including UNHCR, local authorities, and community leaders, to provide legal guidance, training, and advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legal Support & Case Management
✔️ Provide legal advice and support to Persons We Serve (PwS) on refugee rights and humanitarian cases.
✔️ Conduct case follow-ups in the camp and provide mediation in disputes.
✔️ Offer legal coaching and counseling on child protection, GBV, child labor, marriage laws, and voluntary repatriation.
✔️ Assist in drafting legal documents, including card splitting, card merging, and repatriation agreements.
2. Legal Awareness & Community Engagement
✔️ Collaborate with UNHCR, government bodies, and other protection units to raise legal awareness among refugees.
✔️ Conduct legal training sessions for incentive staff and community groups.
✔️ Establish mobile legal help desks to provide legal aid across different camp zones.
✔️ Participate in community meetings to provide key legal updates.
3. Detention Monitoring & Stakeholder Liaison
✔️ Conduct daily visits to detention facilities (police and immigration) to monitor detainee conditions.
✔️ Serve as a liaison between DRC and key stakeholders (police, judiciary, UNHCR, MoHA).
✔️ Undertake legal research and contribute to project proposals and concept notes.
4. Reporting & Documentation
✔️ Maintain legal case databases and update monitoring tables.
✔️ Prepare weekly, monthly, and mid-year reports on legal assistance activities.
✔️ Ensure DRC’s accountability commitments are incorporated into all protection efforts.
Required Qualifications & Skills
🎓 Education & Experience:
- University degree in Law (LL.B or equivalent).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in humanitarian settings, INGOs, or legal aid organizations.
- Strong understanding of human rights law and international refugee law.
💡 Technical & Soft Skills:
✔️ Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
✔️ Experience working with displaced communities and conflict-affected populations.
✔️ Strong case management, problem-solving, and research skills.
✔️ Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
✔️ Fluent in English and Swahili (knowledge of Kirundi is an advantage).
